In times of globalization and high technology, the designer Tao Kurihara, a prolific collaborator of Commes des Garçons, presents a futuristic collection where the driving force, rather than drawing on possible cyber variations, delves into the boundless possibilities of an ethnic matrix.
The clothes evoke different eras, traditions, and cultures, but bold fabric layering and improbable color combinations distort the original inspirations to such an extent that they disorient in time and space. The resulting subject is a new anthropological model, a contaminated and hybrid femininity, suspended in the threads of a present open to further layering.
The displacement from any spatiotemporal framework and the successful outcome reached by the project manage to coexist thanks to the skillful combination of conscious contrasts: fine and Spartan fabrics, vivid patterns and solid colors, deconstructed shapes, ample volumes, and rigorous symmetries.
