COMME des GARÇONS
Rei Kawakubo, creator of the Comme des Garçons line, is regarded as one of the most distinguished intellectuals of her country, as well as the founder of what has come to be known as the “Japanese school.”
Trained in philosophy, she stages in her collections a sort of meta-language of fashion, developed around the theme that inspires each season.
Known for raw-edged cuts, asymmetrical slashes, poetic spirals, and harmonious or antithetical textile layering, three-dimensional or two-dimensional, Rei Kawakubo has explored every possible “deformation of the garment.”
Fabric becomes a material with which to tear apart conventional forms and rework them into abstract shapes, persistent folds, and a medium between the tensions of time and their narrative translation into textiles.
In Umberto Eco’s words, her garments are “open works”: interpretive and formal challenges in which fashion becomes art.
