Sandra Backlund
A young designer of Nordic origin, Sandra Backlund has already enjoyed significant international recognition. Her artisanal and artistic talents, and her focus on recycled materials, have earned her awards and highly respected collaborations.
The MoMu, the world-famous Fashion Museum of Antwerp, is a significant example. After all, Backlund's creations first have the power to surprise, and then they literally captivate, in a sort of irrepressible, almost morbid desire to follow that original thought from which it all began, until reaching it. The Swedish designer's stylistic technique reproduces, multiplies, and overlaps, using a method similar to collage, a basic micro-module from which the final structure takes shape: a dress, a jacket, a knit.
The pieces, handmade and therefore unique, expand little by little in space, simultaneously acquiring sculptural three-dimensionality and their final appearance. Never calculated a priori, this is defined in the doing, freely following the drifts and stimuli of a creative act focused on the material. As she herself says, her way of working has many more connections to the craft of a sculptor than to that of a tailor, and one certainly cannot blame her, given the spectacular results obtained so far. A piece of advice? Allow yourself the time needed to observe the details that make up her masterpieces, following the thread of an absolutely visionary imagination.
